The art of relationship is a complex one. Relationships come in all shapes, sizes, colors, ages, and gender. Since you are here, you might be interested beginning or improving a relationship with a partner, spouse, girlfriend, boyfriend, colleague, family member, child, or friend. Maybe you are wondering whether or not to continue in a relationship or you want to know how to end a relationship in a healthy and safe way.

Characteristics of a positive relationship include the following characteristics. Keep in mind that “positive relationship” infers that it is reciprocal between both people. This means that whatever positive action is happening, it is happening for both people.

  • Healthy Boundaries
  • Safe and regular communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • Giving respectfully to the needs and wants of each other

Much helpful (and not so helpful) has been written and published on relationships both on the internet, magazines, self-help books as well as text books (see just a few recommendations below). My belief is that the art of the relationship begins with self (that would be the “me” or the “I” that is reading this). Beginning with the understanding that we cannot change others around us by our demand or thought, we can begin to help ourselves find an effective way to create the relationships we need and desire.

Foundational to getting the relationships we want is to begin looking inward. That is why I have included here informational links on personal growth. Without the ability to grow and become aware in ourselves we cannot possibly participate, create or draw unto ourselves the positive relationships we so desire.

**Relationship is even important in a therapist and client relationship. And it is a good safe place to practice positive relationship!
